About Helios

Built in Boston.
Proven in production.

Helios Software is a Boston-based engineering firm for healthcare technology leaders. We build clinical software, rescue stalled projects, and help teams put AI to work.

  • Behind the software in 2,000+ clinics, integrated with seven EMRs
  • Open-source FHIR server, written in Rust, free on GitHub
  • Founded 2016, Boston

Why Helios Software exists

Most healthcare software stalls somewhere between the demo and production. Helios Software was founded in 2016 to work on that problem. For a prominent diagnostics company, we set the FHIR strategy, staffed the first engineering team, and did the hands-on development for a platform that now runs in more than 2,000 clinics across seven EMRs.

Along the way we built the Helios FHIR Server, our open-source clinical data engine. It is MIT licensed, public on GitHub, and in use for clinical analytics workloads today.

How we work

Senior engineers, start to finish

The people who scope your project are the people who build it. We keep the team small and take a limited number of engagements at a time.

We build in the open

The Helios FHIR Server is open source under MIT. The commits, the issues, and the roadmap are public on GitHub.

We build with AI

We rebuilt our own development process around AI-assisted engineering. We write about what works and what breaks on the blog.

Who you'll work with

Steve Munini

Founder, CEO and CTO

Steve has spent thirty years building software, most of it for healthcare. Before Helios Software he was COO and CTO of Dossia, a health technology company organized by Intel, Walmart, AT&T, Cardinal Health, Pitney Bowes, and Sanofi. Before that he spent five years in Intel's consulting organization working with Fortune 500 clients, and earlier was chief systems architect at an enterprise software company whose products were adopted by Lands' End and ServiceMaster.

At Helios Software, Steve is the lead engineer on client work and on the FHIR server. He writes code most days. He holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Boston University and an M.S. in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University.

He works with a small group of senior engineers who have built healthcare software at national scale. The team you meet on the first call is the team that does the work.

Where you'll find us

We're active in the HL7 FHIR community, including the SQL-on-FHIR working group. Steve has spoken at the Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Business School's annual healthcare conference, and the Mayo Clinic's client summit.
